Today, approximately 5, 000 Accutane lawsuits have been submitted against Roche. In March 2010, a court reigned over that Roche did not adequately inform patients of Accutane's health risks. Rocher was ordered to pay $25 million to a 38-year-old man who said his severe case of inflammatory bowel disease took place due to his treatment with Accutane.

Inflammatory intestinal disease includes two serious conditions known as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, all of which are associated with Accutane treatment. Other serious side results of the medication include depression, suicidal thoughts, labor and birth abnormalities, liver damage, vomiting, loss of appetite, weight damage and jaundice.

To help combat these risks, the Food and Drug Administration approved a restricted distribution program called iPLEDGE, requiring every sole pregnant woman or women who may become with the child to participate before taking Accutane or isotretinoin, a generic form of the drug that is still on industry.
